My Next Gen Workstation Build

I built this workstation for video and photo editing as my work takes me onto bigger projects. I waited far too long to upgrade my home setup. Coming from my previous PC built in 2013 almost exclusively for photo editing only, this build feels like a quantum leap in speed and lifts the restrictions from so many jobs and projects going forward.

Specs:

  • Case: NZXT H7 Flow

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D

  • GPU: Nvidia 5070 Ti 16GB

  • RAM: 96GB DDR5

  • Board: Asus ProArt X870E

  • CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken 360

  • NVME: 8TB photo, 2TB project, 1TB OS/programs

  • SSD: 2 cache drives

  • Intake: 3 x 140mm front, 3 x 120mm bottom

  • Exhaust: 3 x 120mm top, 1 x 140mm rear

  • PSU: SeaSonic VERTEX GX-1000 PSU

It is so refreshing to have a computer at home that I feel unrestricted by now. I can seamlessly edit 6K Canon RAW footage with Adobe Premiere Pro on it, without creating proxies. It makes things so fast to record in extremely high-fidelity, where I can apply an aggressive grade and then export almost immediately for use. I love this thing.

96GB of RAM is perfect for now, but I can see myself doubling within a couple of years based on where my projects are taking me. I wanted a strong CPU for Lightroom and Photoshop performance, and the 9950X3D made perfect sense, giving me ample headroom for the future.

One noteworthy part in this build is the 8TB NVME, which I use for Lightroom RAW storage -I can blaze through editing photos! I have a 2TB NVME project drive, and 1TB OS/program drive. I also have 2 SATA SSDs set up as cache drives.

The build was focused on function, but I did try to stick with neutral looking parts to create a stark look. I painted the GPU shroud satin black to match the rest of the build, I found the stock ASUS cooler was atrocious, but I camped Microcenter store openings to get this thing, so I made what I found work!
